Why I Am Committed to Developing the Smart Buoy
A swim buoy gives an open-water swimmer an additional layer of protection. It improves visibility, provides support when rest is needed, and can carry essential personal items.
But once the swimmer leaves the shore, another problem begins.
From the perspective of the people watching from land, the swimmer can become like a kite whose string has been cut—visible for a while, perhaps, but no longer truly connected.
A family member may wonder: Where are they now?
A coach may need to know: Is everyone still moving normally?
A safety team may ask: Has anyone drifted away from the planned route or stopped unexpectedly?
These questions led me to think beyond the traditional function of a swim buoy.
Trackers are already widely used to monitor vehicles, equipment, and animals over long distances. I began asking myself:
Why couldn’t the same principle be adapted to connect an open-water swimmer’s buoy with the people responsible for their safety on shore?
That question became the foundation of the KAPSULE Smart Buoy concept.
By placing a compact GPS tracker inside the buoy’s storage compartment and transmitting its location through a LoRaWAN network, coaches or safety personnel could monitor swimmers from shore—without requiring the swimmer to wear another complicated device.
The buoy would no longer be only something that floats beside the swimmer. It could become part of a connected safety system.
This concept is especially suitable for:
• Organized open-water training
• Swimming clubs and coaching groups
• Triathlon and long-distance swimming events
• Beaches, lakes, and supervised aquatic programs
A Smart Buoy cannot replace lifeguards, careful supervision, or proper safety procedures. However, it could give the people on shore earlier and clearer information—helping them notice an unusual situation before it becomes a serious emergency.
My goal is simple:
To keep the swimmer and the people watching over them connected, even after the swimmer leaves the shore.
I am currently looking for swimming organizations, coaches, event operators, and water-safety professionals interested in helping test and develop this concept in real open-water environments.
